The great
baldacchino of St Peter's Basilica in Rome shelters the high altar and both stand above the tomb of the Apostle Peter. It is an enormous structure, designed by
the sculptor and architect Bernini and high above it soars the expanse of Michaelangelo's dome. Tradition states that
the bronze for the baldacchin came from the ceiling of the portico of the Pantheon. The serpentine columns reputedly
mimic the shape of those that came from Solomon's Temple.
