Rodeo Riders
Pastel and Colored Pencil on paper
16 x 20
Early one morning in the same month as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was to begin, a friend and I decided that
we would take a drive to Schulenberg, Texas to visit the Painted Churches. As we got to the town we saw at the end of
Main Street a congregation of people, horse trailers and kids on horseback, all of them dressed in the same western clothing
and some carrying flags bearing the emblem of the Houston Police Department. We stopped an officer and asked him what
they were doing and he said that they were delivering a formal proclamation of invitation from the City of Houston to the
City of Schulenberg to take part in the rodeo and that these riders had riden from one city to the next, a distance of more
than a hundred miles.
