ST PETERS BASILICA
Pastel and Colored Pencil on paper
16 x 20

The interior of the Basilica of St Peter is dark and mysterious, with light coming in only from windows above the nave.  The atmosphere is actually quite dim, almost cavernous and completely overwhelming in scale.  Michaelangelo's Pieta is located in a chapel near the Porta Sancta or Holy Door and it is so dimly lit that I passed by it the first time without even noticing it.  The Holy Door is opened by the Pope only during a Jubilee year, an occasion that occurs only once every 25 years.  From the inside of the Basilica, you see only a wall.
