BULL ELK BY THE YELLOWSTONE
Pastel and Colored Pencil on paper
16 x 20

Elk are truly magnificent creatures, but they are dangerous and the Park Rangers in Yellowstone National Park continually have to warn visitors against getting too close to them.  I used a relatively long lens to capture this image of a Bull Elk lounging contentedly by the banks of the Yellowstone River, surrounded by his many wives and children.  He seemed contented enough, and why shouldn't he?  He lives the life of a monarch in a Patriarchal society.

The animals in Yellowstone seem unafraid of the presence of humans, so it is possible to approach them though it is unadvisable to do so.  Tourists are injured and sometimes killed every year by Bison and other wildlife, so it's best to stay at a safe distance and enjoy the wild spaces on their own terms.
